How to Import Brazilian Sugar into China

China is one of the world's largest sugar importers, and Brazil is a leading origin. Here's how Brazilian ICUMSA 45 and VHP raw sugar reach the Chinese market — grades, ports, delivery terms and the import rules to check first.

Why China imports Brazilian sugar

China consumes more sugar than it produces, so it relies on imports to balance the market. Brazilian cane sugar is competitive on both price and logistics, which makes it a recurring origin for Chinese refineries and food manufacturers. Demand splits between raw sugar for domestic refining and refined white sugar for direct industrial use.

Which grade fits your operation

If you operate or supply a refinery, the feedstock is VHP raw sugar (ICUMSA 600–1200, polarization ≥ 99.4%). If you supply the food & beverage industry or retail, you want refined ICUMSA 45 (colour ≤ 45 IU). We supply both.

Delivery, ports & terms

Shipments load at Santos or Paranaguá and typically move on CFR or CIF to major Chinese discharge ports. For bulk volumes, cargo ships in break-bulk or bulk vessels; smaller lots move in containers (50 kg or 1 MT jumbo bags).

Import rules to confirm first

China administers sugar imports through a tariff-rate quota (TRQ) and import licensing. Confirm your quota allocation, licence and applicable duty with your Chinese customs broker before contracting — it determines your true landed cost. We provide the full export document set (certificate of origin, SGS/Intertek inspection, health/phyto certificates) required for clearance.

Importing into China — FAQ

Does China import Brazilian sugar?

Yes — Brazil is one of the largest origins for China's sugar imports. China runs a structural deficit and imports both raw sugar for its refineries and refined sugar for the food industry.

Should I import VHP raw or ICUMSA 45 into China?

Refineries import VHP raw sugar (ICUMSA 600–1200) as feedstock; food manufacturers and distributors import refined ICUMSA 45. Tell us your use and we quote the right grade.

Which Incoterm is used for shipments to China?

Typically CFR or CIF to a Chinese discharge port, so the seller arranges ocean freight (and insurance on CIF) from Santos or Paranaguá.
