How to Import Sugar from Brazil: Step-by-Step Guide
Importing sugar from Brazil is straightforward once you know the sequence: qualify the supplier, agree terms, follow the documentary chain, secure payment with a bank instrument, and ship under inspection. Here is the process, step by step.
- 01
Qualify the supplier
Confirm the company is a registered exporter (corporate record / CNPJ), works under KYC/AML, and proves product by independent inspection — not by exposing its mills. Verifiable identity is your first defence against scams.
- 02
Agree product & commercial terms
Fix the grade (ICUMSA 45, VHP), quantity, packaging (50 kg / 1 MT jumbo / bulk), Incoterm (FOB · CFR · CIF) and destination port. This becomes the basis of the offer.
- 03
Documentary sequence
Serious trade follows a documented order: LOI (buyer intent) → FCO (full corporate offer) → ICPO (irrevocable purchase order) → SPA (sales & purchase agreement). Each step gates the next.
- 04
Payment instrument
Payment is secured by a bank instrument — DLC (documentary letter of credit) or SBLC — issued by a first-tier bank and governed by UCP 600. Funds are released against compliant shipping documents.
- 05
Inspection & shipment
Quality and quantity are verified at loading by SGS / Intertek. Cargo ships from Santos or Paranaguá; on CFR/CIF the seller arranges freight (and insurance on CIF) to your discharge port.
- 06
Customs at destination
Clear the cargo with the shipping documents (B/L, invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, SGS report, phytosanitary/health certificate). Requirements vary by country — confirm import licences and duties in advance.
Two decisions shape the whole deal: your Incoterm (CIF vs FOB) and the sugar grade (ICUMSA 45 vs VHP). Get those right and the rest of the process follows.
Start with a quotation
Duna Trading runs this process end to end from São Paulo — qualified supply, Incoterms 2020, DLC/SBLC under UCP 600 and SGS/Intertek inspection. Send your grade, quantity and destination and the desk reverts with a quotation.
